When it comes to Final Fantasy, fans immediately think of fantastical worlds, thrilling battles, captivating storylines, and unforgettable characters that have shaped the history of video games. But there is another element that runs through every chapter of this legendary saga: love stories. Just think of some of the most iconic romances that have marked over 30 years of Final Fantasy: Squall and Rinoa, Yuna and Tidus, Snow and Serah, or, to mention the most recent one chronologically, Clive and Jill.
And yet, there is one Final Fantasy love story that has never been told, until now: the story of Rossana and Michael. These names might not sound familiar to fans, and for a very special reason: they are not characters from any of the games in the series, but two real-life people. So why mention them in this article? The answer is simple: Rossana and Micheal sealed their love with a wedding held in Eorzea, the fantastical world where the events of Final Fantasy XIV take place. An unusual tale, which Excaliber is proud to share through an interview with the real-life couple behind this virtual union.

Rossana is 37, Michael is 36. Both of them, almost ironically, work in the video game industry. She is a Producer & Project Manager, while he is a Game Designer. But their story does not begin in Eorzea: it starts in Italy. “We met 15 years ago in Florence during a directing course” the couple shares. “We have been together for 14 years and have been living together for almost 5.” Even back then, they were no strangers to the world of video games. “Michael played a lot of Final Fantasy XI during his teenage years. When we met, he was curious to try Final Fantasy XIV, although he had heard some negative things about it. ” As some of you may recall, the launch of the fourteenth chapter of the Final Fantasy saga was disastrous. However, Square Enix – the company behind Final Fantasy – did not give up. Instead, they decided to rebuild the MMORPG from the ground up, creating what was essentially an entirely new game. This second release came with a subtitle, ‘A Realm Reborn‘, redeeming the fourteenth installment and marking a rebirth for the project worthy of the phoenix – a creature well known to those who have played the various entries in the series. “When the game was rebuilt by the developers, Michael and I immediately signed up for the beta and started playing it together” Rossana explains.
Just like in the real world, relationships between people are a key part of Final Fantasy XIV’s virtual universe. These connections often grow stronger within Free Companies – the game’s equivalent of player guilds. Rossana and Micheal, known in-game as P’puze Puze and Twike Starkiller, decided to join the same Free Company. They initially took on the appearance of two Lalafell, one of the various playable races in Final Fantasy XIV, before later transforming into two Viera, a race particularly beloved by the game’s community. And so, adventure after adventure, their bond grew stronger in both worlds, the real one and the virtual one. Until they made the most important decision of all: to get married.
And so, in 2016, Rossana and Michael tied the knot. Or rather: the wedding of P’puze Puze and Twike Starkiller took place. Because our two heroes did not marry in the real world, but in Eorzea. “We got married virtually in Final Fantasy XIV because at the time we did not have enough money to live together or get married in real life. So we decided to symbolically seal our union online, in our favorite game. .” But make no mistake: even though it was far less expensive than a traditional wedding, the virtual one still required quite a bit of preparation time. “It was not quite like planning a real-life ceremony, but a certain level of organization was definitely needed. In Final Fantasy XIV, getting married requires starting a specific quest that sets several objectives for both players: obtaining wedding outfits and rings, and sending out invitations to friends via the in-game mail system. ”

Despite having a meaning and atmosphere unlike any other quest in the game, the wedding quest is still considered a side quest within the dynamic world of Final Fantasy XIV. And that comes with certain limitations and restrictions. For example, the couple can’t choose the location of the ceremony. “The game ‘forces’ you to get married in the Sanctum of the Twelve – a location that is definitely impressive, but not customizable. That is why Michael and I later celebrated our union in the house we created for the members of our Free Company. .” This allowed the newlyweds to surround themselves with people, whether seasoned players or guests who had come to Eorzea solely to share in Rossana and Michael’s joyful moment. “Of course, we involved our friends and the members of our Free Company. Some of them were not Final Fantasy XIV players. But just to be part of our special moment and join the celebration, they created trial accounts that allowed them to access the game and be there with us. ”
There was no shortage of surprises: even though the wedding had to follow a set structure, the guests’ creativity led to some hilarious moments. “We had friends popping out of cakes using in-game glitches” Michael recalls with a laugh. “Some guests showed up in rather… unique outfits. And everything was made even more festive by the quirky and cheerful behavior of the moogle who officiated the ceremony. ” The moogle, one of the most iconic creatures in the Final Fantasy saga. A must-have for such a meaningful celebration. And once the wedding quest was completed, P’puze Puze and Twike Starkiller received a special and surprisingly useful keepsake. “During the wedding, Rossana and I received two unique rings that allow us to teleport to each other at any time” Micheal explains. A virtual concept that perfectly mirrors the essence of marriage itself: staying close and supporting one another through any hardship – including ferocious, ravenous behemoths.

The wedding in Final Fantasy represented not only a symbolic union, but also a way to bridge the distance that separated Rossana and Michael at the time. “It made us feel more connected and closer, especially since we were still living with our parents and could only see each other on weekends. Playing Final Fantasy XIV was one of our ways to spend time together in the evenings and chat. ” The virtual wedding ultimately strengthened their relationship, which continued to grow both in real life and within the world of video games. “Since we met, playing together has been a very important part of our relationship. In games where we can create our own characters, we often name them using our nicknames for each other: Michael names his character Roxie, and I name mine Mike. And of course, we design them to look as much like us as possible ” Final Fantasy XIV remains a constant point of reference for them, one they are not willing to give up. “We have never stopped playing it together. We are a nerdy couple: our evenings are shaped by video games and TV series. ”
Mutual support is the foundation of any good relationship, and this one is no exception. “In video games, we behave just like we do in real life, always supporting each other and trying to help out in difficult moments.” In a world as vast as that of an MMORPG, there are countless activities to enjoy, but one remains their favorite. “We often run dungeons together, and our favorites are the Deep Dungeons” Rossana reveals. Despite the challenge of these procedurally generated dungeons with rich rewards, there is no shortage of funny moments. “In Deep Dungeons, I often trigger traps on purpose that turn my character into a frog. Then, I do silly voiceovers for it, which cracks up both Michael and our friends.”

Many people have relationships that blend the real and virtual worlds – whether friendships or, as in the case of Rossana and Michael, romantic bonds. Their wedding is proof that virtual worlds can be just as meaningful as real ones, capable of evoking equally powerful emotions. It is also proof that sometimes, what happens in video games can become reality: because soon, our heroes will become husband and wife in the real world too. And Excaliber wishes them a happily ever after. To both Michael and Rossana, and to P’puze Puze and Twike Starkiller.
